APA Automated Vehicles Symposium Report

The American Planning Association (APA) released a report summarizing the findings of their symposium and research on the implications of autonomous vehicles for cities and regions. The report intends to inform planners and local government officials “about the need to plan for the potential benefits and negative impacts of autonomous vehicles and what steps they can take now to prepare their communities.”

The report identifies the following key policy concerns related to autonomous vehicles:

  • Roles and responsibilities at each level of government
  • Retrofitting existing infrastructure as AVs are deployed over time
  • Strategies for revenue replacement prior to AV deployment at scale
  • Freight, deliveries, and logistics
  • Congestion management
  • Sidewalk/curb demand management

The report also provides guidance for how to plan for autonomous vehicles, including example Comprehensive Plan Standards and best practices.
