USDOT/NSF Award #1951890: Making Micromobility Smarter and Safer

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, funding for a project assessing micromobility and pedestrian risk and integrating social and technology solutions to improve safety.  The project aims to “use new methods to gather better data on what determines pedestrian and micro-mobility risk, create tools that deliver more integrated solutions in collaboration with industry micro-mobility partner Bird, and test the tools in the service of the needs of the real communities of New Brunswick and Highland Park, NJ.” Researchers will develop a test bed to develop technology to detect near misses between vehicles and pedestrians, e-scooters, e-bikes, and bicycles and evaluate social and technological risk reduction strategies.
