National League of Cities Autonomous Vehicle Pilots Across America

The National League of Cities developed an action guide for cities considering autonomous vehicle pilot projects. It lays out different approaches to pilots and partnership with private companies, as well as the following recommendations for city leadership in the realm of autonomous vehicles:

  • Determine the city’s goals and reasons for pursuing an AV pilot project.
  • Build a consortium.
  • Engage the private sector.
  • Look to join or create a regional alliance.
  • Scale appropriately.
  • Work with the state.
  • Pursue a phased plan.

The report also contains case studies of autonomous vehicle technology pilot projects in a range of cities, including the pilot of a 12-passenger shuttle in Arlington, Texas, and app-based rideshares in Boston and Pittsburgh.
