Analysis of Travel Choices and Scenarios for Sharing Rides

The USDOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) report, “Analysis of Travel Choices and Scenarios for Sharing Rides,” analyzes factors influencing user decisions to use shared options in ridehailing applications like Uber or Lyft.  The study used data from surveys, app-based ridesharing data, and literature review related to behavioral responses to differences in cost and time. A key finding was that price is the most influential factor in rider decisions; the study found that a $1 per trip increase for solo trips compared to shared trips would save over 3.5 billion vehicle miles annually across the 15 markets analyzed.
