WZDx — Work Zone Data Exchange Specification (GitHub)
The Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) Specification is a U.S. Department of Transportation initiative to create a common data standard and interoperable format for sharing work zone information from infrastructure owners to third-party users, such as navigation companies, mapping services, and automated driving systems (ADS). The repository includes:
- JSON schema definitions for different data feeds (e.g., work zone events, device status)
- Documentation and examples to help agencies produce compliant feeds
- Guides on creating, validating, and publishing feeds
- Comments and release notes on version changes
The goal of WZDx is to make real-time road condition data (like lane closures, detours, and work zone activity) widely accessible, improving safety and efficiency for all road users. It was developed under the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) as part of broader efforts to standardize transportation data formats.
