Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) – U.S. Department of Transportation

Government document

The Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) initiative, led by the U.S. Department of Transportation, defines a common data specification and framework for sharing work zone data from infrastructure owners and operators (IOOs) with third‑party users such as navigation services and automated driving systems (ADS). The goal is to enhance safety and mobility by enabling consistent access to work zone information — such as lane closures and construction activity — so vehicles and travelers can make better decisions in real time.

The WZDx specification has evolved through multiple versions (most recently v4.2 as of 2023), and work continues to transition it toward a formalized standard in collaboration with organizations like ITE, AASHTO, NEMA, and SAE. The program also includes the WZDx Feed Registry, which lists active data feeds from state and local agencies, and has been supported through demonstration grants to help public agencies publish unified data feeds.
